The electric vehicle industry is experiencing a boom due to the Government’s low carbon subsidy for both vehicles and charging infrastructure. Rolec Services Ltd commissioned TRIG Creative to design a flexible utility solution that would play a major role in developing a UK charging infrastructure. The resulting ‘WallPod’ product addresses the needs of the domestic charging market, whilst offering a practical solution to retail outlets, private businesses and car parks. The basic system consists of two pods; one houses a RCBO breaker switch alongside a meter to monitor power consumption, the other houses the relevant vehicle connection socket. In addition to this the pod system also offers customisation through a variety of ancillary pods such as an outdoor tap and mains socket. Through its unique flexible connection ability and modular nature the ‘WallPod’ is a market first and the ideal solution to domestic and commercial vehicle charging which has given our client a distinct marketing advantage in this emerging sector. Kavia was again the UK toolmaker and injection moulding partner and has considerable experience in moulding PC UV Flame retardant in colours and thin wall sections.
Kavia worked closely with our materials partner 4PLAS to select 4LEX 10F13300 UV FR (polycarbonate, flame retardant UV stabilized, in the various colours) because of excellent long term weatherability, high impact strength at high and low temperatures, excellent dimensional stability for part accuracy and surface detail, good electrical insulation properties and flame retardancy to support the Rolec and Wallpod brand image of high quality and high design for domestic and commercial settings.
The Wallpod is presented in a number of colour ascents and these are compounded to get consistent colour mix and show off the high gloss surface of the main body mouldings.
